How to Run an Instagram Giveaway

A good Instagram giveaway is mostly decided before it goes live: the prize, the entry rule, the dates and the way the winner will be chosen. This guide walks through each step in the order you will meet it, with the details that keep entrants confident and your account out of trouble.

Updated

1. Decide what the giveaway is for

Before choosing a prize, decide what a successful giveaway looks like for you. New followers who care about your niche, more comments on a launch post, and a thank-you to the people who already follow you are three different goals, and each one points to a different prize and a different entry rule.

Write the goal down in one sentence. It is the test every later decision has to pass: if an entry step does not serve the goal, drop it.

2. Choose a prize your audience actually wants

The prize decides who enters. A prize tied to what you do, such as your own product, a session of your service or something your followers already ask about, attracts people who will still be interested the day after the draw. A generic, high-value prize attracts accounts that enter every giveaway and unfollow when it ends.

Think about delivery before you announce. If you can only ship to some countries, or the prize is a local experience, that becomes an eligibility rule you must state up front.

3. Pick an entry method you can check

Every entry step is a small cost to the entrant and a rule you will have to enforce. Fewer, checkable steps beat a long list nobody follows exactly.

  • Comment to enter. The simplest rule and the easiest to verify: every comment on the post is an entry.
  • Tag a friend. Spreads the post to new people. Ask for real friends who would want the prize, and set a minimum number of tags the picker can check.
  • Use a hashtag or keyword. Separates entries from ordinary comments and questions. The picker can require it, matched as a whole hashtag or a plain word.
  • Follow the account. Common, but no tool that reads comments can confirm who follows you. If you require it, check the winner's profile by hand before announcing.
  • Share to Stories. Cannot be checked by any comment picker, and Stories disappear after a day. Treat it as optional rather than a condition of entry.

Decide too whether people can enter more than once. Either answer is fine; what matters is saying it in the rules and applying it the same way to everyone. The one-entry-per-person rule in the comment picker keeps each account's earliest comment and drops the rest.

4. Write the rules and the caption

The caption is where most entrants read the rules, so it has to carry the essentials: what the prize is, exactly how to enter, when entries close (with the time zone), who is eligible, how and when the winner will be chosen and announced, and a statement that Instagram is not involved.

Longer official rules can live on a page linked from your bio. The Instagram giveaway rules guide covers what Instagram requires and has a rules template to copy, and the caption templates give you ready-made wording for each kind of giveaway.

5. Set the dates and keep them

Pick an opening time, a closing time and a draw time, and put all three in the caption. A few days to two weeks is enough for most accounts: long enough for followers to see the post, short enough that it still feels current.

Draw at the time you announced. The picker reads the comments on the post as they are when you draw and has no cut-off filter, so a draw run hours late may include entries that arrived after the deadline. If comments keep coming in, say in the caption that entries are closed, and draw promptly.

6. Promote it while it is open

  • Share the post to your Stories, and post a reminder before entries close.
  • Pin the giveaway post to the top of your profile so visitors see it first.
  • If a partner brand is involved, publish it as a Collab post so it appears on both profiles and every comment lands in one place.
  • Answer questions in the comments quickly. Unclear rules cost entries.

7. Close entries and draw the winner

When the deadline passes, copy the post link and paste it into the free Instagram comment picker. Set the same rules you published, choose how many winners and backups you need, and draw. Screen-record the whole draw, from pasting the link to the winner appearing, so you can show exactly how it happened.

The guide to picking a winner goes through the draw step by step, including how to filter entries and how to prove the result was fair.

8. Announce the winner and deliver the prize

Announce the winner publicly, in a Story, a feed post or a comment on the giveaway post, and message them from your own account. Give them a clear deadline to reply. If they miss it, move to the first backup and say so publicly; a quiet switch is what makes people doubt a draw.

Giveaways attract impersonators: copycat accounts that message entrants claiming they won and asking for a shipping fee or card details. Say in your caption which account will contact the winner and that you will never ask for payment, and warn entrants again when you announce.

Mistakes that sink a giveaway

  • Requiring a purchase to enter. In many places, including the US, a prize plus chance plus a required payment can make a promotion an illegal lottery.
  • Asking people to tag themselves or others in photos they do not appear in, which Instagram's Promotion Guidelines prohibit.
  • Moving the deadline or the draw date after the giveaway has started.
  • Choosing the winner by hand, or announcing a winner without any record of how they were chosen.
  • Rules that say one thing and a draw that does another, such as requiring two tags and then counting comments with one.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an Instagram giveaway run?

Long enough for your followers to see it and short enough to feel current. For most accounts that is a few days to two weeks. Whatever you choose, state the closing date and time zone in the caption and draw when you said you would.

Do I need a business account to run a giveaway on Instagram?

No. Personal, creator and business accounts can all run a giveaway. The account does need to be public while you draw, because no third-party tool can read comments on a private account.

Can I make following my account a condition of entry?

Many giveaways do, but a tool that reads comments cannot see who follows you. If following is a rule, check the winner's profile by hand before you announce, and draw a backup in case they do not qualify.

Is it legal to run a giveaway on Instagram?

Giveaways are allowed on Instagram under its Promotion Guidelines, and a free-to-enter random draw is lawful in most places. Requiring a purchase, or running a giveaway in a country with registration rules, can change that. This guide is general information, not legal advice.

How do I choose the winner fairly?

Use a random comment picker on the giveaway post, apply the rules you published, and screen-record the draw. InstaCommentPickers is free, needs no login, and shows a receipt with the values anyone can use to re-run the draw.
